How I Became a Fulltimer

When Bill proposed to me in 1991, we were camping with my parents in Great Smoky Mountains National Park.  I’ll never forget he said, “I promise it will never be boring.”  That statement has proven to be the biggest understatement of my life!

First, he moves me 70 miles from my hometown, and then two years later he moves me 700  miles to the Florida Keys to run The Boat House, a marina in Marathon, FL.  I was  homesick for almost a year.  But then I learned about fishing, snorkeling, bully-netting, and warm winters.         (I also learned about hurricanes, but that’s another story.)

Fast forward to 1999.  The marina is sold.  We had decisions to make: do we stay in Marathon, do we go back to Atlanta, what do we want to do?  Bill came up with the idea of taking a year off & doing some traveling.  We had always been avid campers, so I was intrigued with this idea.  But could we really do it?

We read lots of books and did lots of research.  We were finally set: we had a new Ford F350 & Cardinal 5th wheel.  We had our mailing & banking arranged.  And on February 12, 2000, I became a fulltimer.
